This lesson introduces you to several new adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions, as follows:

•  Adverbs – of time

•  Prepositions – used with Accusative case

•  Conjunctions – used as an expression

Прислівники Adverbs

In the sentence Тепер я читаю, the word тепер (now) is an adverb of time explaining when an action or event is taking place.

The adverb коли (when) is usually used to formulate a question about when an action or event is taking place.

Коли ти читаєш?

Тепер я читаю.

II. Exercise 4.i

Form the appropriate questions using the adverb коли. Note the pronoun substitution when formulating the questions.

Example: Тепер я слухаю. Коли ти слухаєш?

1. Тепер ми питаємо. ________________________________

2. Тепер ви читаєте. ________________________________

3. Він тепер слухає. ________________________________

4. Вони тепер читають. _______________________________

5. Ти тепер слухаєш. ______________________________

6. Ми тепер читаємо. _______________________________

Прийменники Prepositions

To create a question which asks ‘about something', we use the preposition про (about) with the interrogative pronoun що (what):

Про що ти читаєш?

However, the word що is also used to explain fully the action of the verb.

Я читаю про спорт.

The preposition про always takes the Accusative case of the word to which it refers.

Про що? Про спорт.

Сполучники Conjunctions

The conjunction а was introduced in the sentence « А що ти читаєш? »

It is used at the beginning of an interrogative sentence for effect, as a creative way to emphasize a question. Note the addition of the conjunction a in the following questions:

А що ти робиш?

А хто вдома?

А хто це?

А що ти читаєш?
