Introduction to Unit VII: Telephone Conversations

Unit VII will focus on phrases and structures commonly heard in telephone conversations in Canada, with a comparative look at some cultural norms for telephone conversations in Ukraine.

Learning Outcomes

  1. To learn Ukrainian vocabulary and sentence patterns commonly used in brief, polite phone conversations.
  2. To participate in activities which reinforce listening, speaking, writing and reading on the topic ‘Telephone Conversations’.
  3. To become familiar with two new cases – the Instrumental and the Dative case and their use with certain prepositions.
  4. To display a growing proficiency in declining verbs in the First Group Conjugation and to become familiar with the Second Group Conjugation.
  5. To be introduced to several structures and phrases commonly used when exchanging telephone numbers or having a short phone conversation in Ukraine .

Synopsis

Roman calls Olenka at home. Olenka’s mother, Mrs. Kozak, answers the phone. Roman introduces himself and requests permission to speak with Olenka.

Follow the procedure which is outlined below.

Step 1: View Slides --- Listen to Audio Clips

View the PowerPoint (PPT) Slide presentation. Listen to Dialogue 7 – Телефон, using either the web link given, or the CD ROM provided. Click on the Audio button to hear the audio clips.

Step 2: View Slides --- Listen to Audio Clips --- Repeat

Listen to the dialogue again, and echo-read (repeat what you hear) after each audio clip. Pay particular attention to the stresses on words and the intonation pattern in the sentences.
