Introduction to Unit XVI:
Helping One Another
Unit XVI will focus on the idea of family members helping one another with errands, shopping or household chores. The Unit introduces vocabulary for common household tools, the concepts of 'continuing' and 'completed' verb action, and finally, a review of several types of adverbs.

1. To identify new expressions presented in the Unit dialogue.
2. To examine several new uses of the Genitive Case, as well as review previously learned uses of the Accusative and Genitive Cases.
3. To recognize the names of household tools and apply the vocabulary in exercises related to the Unit theme.
4. To discriminate between two new aspects of verbs, the Perfective and Imperfective, and the cultural implications of the Imperative Mood of verbs.
5. To recall and apply previously learned information about the types of adverbs and their uses in sentences. |

Розмова 16 – Що купити?
Синопсис
Тарас спішить, бо вже час іти до школи. Мама питає, чи Тарас може зайти до крамниці по дорозі додому. Мама хоче хліба, молока й масла. Тарас питає, чи мама має список. Мама думає, що Тарас може все запам'ятати, але Тарас не думає, що він запам'ятає! Мама дає Тарасові олівець і папір, і він пише - хліб, молоко, масло - на списку. Тарас хоче купити Петрикові цукерки, також.
Taras' mother would like him to stop by the grocery store after school to pick up a few items. Taras asks for a grocery list, but mother assures Taras that only a few items are needed, so a list isn't necessary. Taras is concerned that he may forget something, so he creates his own list. |
Dialogue – PowerPoint (PPT) Presentation
Follow the procedure as outlined below. By now this pattern is familiar to you!
Step 1: View Slides --- Listen to Audio Clips
Step 1: View the PowerPoint (PPT) presentation. Listen to Dialogue 16 - Що купити? using either the web link given, or the CD ROM provided. Click on the Audio button to hear the audio clips.
Step 2: View Slides --- Listen to Audio Clips --- Repeat
Step 2: Listen to the dialogue again, and echo-read frame by frame, using the audio clips as your guide. This means that you should repeat what you hear after each audio clip. Pay particular attention to the stresses on words and the intonation pattern in the sentences.
