The major theme of Unit XX is shopping, therefore the verbs коштувати (to cost), купувати (to buy), продавати (to sell) and дякувати (to thank) are central to Lesson 3. Demonstrative pronouns are also reviewed in this lesson as applied to specific items being purchased.

The dialogue questions give us the present tense form of the verbs купувати and коштувати. These verbs are conjugated like most Group I є - ють verbs.

Чи ти купуєш золотий браслет? Ні, я купую золотий перстень.

Тhe most commonly used forms of the verb коштувати are the third person singular and plural forms. This is because we wouldn't normally say ‘I cost', ‘you cost', ‘or ‘we cost'.

The question Скільки коштує/коштують …? is always followed by a response in the Nominative Case. The response may be singular or plural, depending on the noun used in the question.

Скільки коштує цей синій костюм? Цей синій костюм коштує сто долярів.

Скільки коштують ці темні окуляри? Ці темні окуляри коштують двадцять долярів.

Notice that all words which modify the noun (pronouns, adjectives) also appear in the Nominative Case.

The verb продавати ( to sell) is a regular Group I Conjugation verb with the shortened stem ‘ прода'.

While there are no new pronouns in Unit XX, several demonstrative pronouns are used to indicate which produce is being purchased. Review the information given below to understand some important differences involving demonstrative pronouns.

When identifying an object or person , use the demonstrative pronoun це.

це (this is, these are) - Це книжка. Це вікно. Це вчитель. Це учні.

When referring to these objects or persons, the demonstrative pronoun це functions like an adjective and must agree with the gender, number and case of the noun.
