Lesson 3 introduces you to two new pronoun-verb combinations, as follows:
The verb грати (to play) has been introduced in its third person singular form.
The interrogative pronoun хто requires a response in the third person.
When used with the verb грати, the responses may be as follows:
The third person plural, вони (they), is used when more than one person or group is involved in an activity. Note the reference to the dialogue below.
In the above example, the names of the two teams are masculine nouns which become pronouns in the third person singular. When the team names are put together, they appear in the third person plural.
Now we turn to the verb грати (to play) in the present tense and its particular verb conjugations.
You will note that the verb endings are identical to the conjugation for the verbs питати and читати introduced earlier. This is because the verb грати follows the pattern of Group I Conjugation , or the є-ють, е-уть group which was introduced in the previous unit. The verb мати (to have) is also presented in this Unit. It is another Group I Conjugation verb, with an identical pattern of conjugation.
The conjugation pattern is given below.
III. Exercise 3.i Complete the following exercise with the appropriate form of the verb. Try to complete the exercise without looking at the Group I conjugation patterns given in the lesson.
Особові займенники – Personal Pronouns The following table reviews the personal pronouns introduced in the course material.
You will recall that in Unit 1, Lesson 3, you were introduced to the Ukrainian word ви and its two meanings. In the most basic sense, ви means you in the plural form. From the Ukrainian cultural perspective, ви is used as a sign of respect for one's position, one's age or with strangers. In some instances it is written with a capital letter. Study the chart below. Notice the substitution pattern for the second person follows the example given earlier for the third person. Any time the second person singular is used, it is followed with the second person plural.
III. Exercise 3.ii Read the following statements out loud and become familiar with the pattern of pronoun substitutions.
III. Exercise 3.iii Write in the responses to the statements, following the example given.
Cultural Enrichment: Continue to practise your Ukrainian handwriting skills by referring to the exercises which have been placed in the Cultural Enrichment section for Unit III.
