Lesson 2 expands on the use of nouns, as follows:
The dialogue Квитки introduced two proper nouns which are the names of Canadian cities as well as sports teams.
Read the names of the Canadian provinces/territories and cities as they appear in the list below. The capital city (столиця) of each province appears with an asterisk *. The list may look daunting at first, but keep in mind that most of the proper nouns given are cognates with English counterparts. You will easily recognize many of them!
Become familiar with the provinces, territories and cities on a map of Canada if you are unsure of where they are located.
Називний відмінок - Nominative Case The proper nouns Вінніпеґ (Winnipeg) and Саскатун (Saskatoon) presented in the dialogue Квитки are inanimate nouns in the nominative case.
You will notice that the order of the words in the sentence is inverted. The verb грають (are playing) appears first in the sentence and the subject of the sentence, Вінніпеґ і Саскатун appear after the verb. In Ukrainian, the order of words in a sentence is not as fixed as it is in English. Thus word order may vary without fear of making a grammatical error. For example, the above sentence may also be written as follows:
III. Exercise 2.i Fill in the missing vowels for the provinces given below. Try not to look back at the list given earlier until you have completed the exercise.
