This final unit of the course presents a review of prepositions and adverbs. You are reminded that Cultural Enrichment Segment B is to be completed before you write the final exam.
As there are no new prepositions in this Unit, this is a good time to review the prepositions which you already know and their uses with specific cases of nouns.
X. Exercise 4.i
Complete the following chart with the Ukrainian name of the case(s) which are used with each preposition.

The Unit X dialogue contains two adverbs, one which is familiar to you, and one which is new. The adverb дуже (very) has been introduced in a previous Unit. No doubt you have seen and heard the phrase “Дуже добре! ” (Very good!) many times from Ukrainian friends or relatives! However, the word дуже is also used in sentences to show that we ‘very much’ want to go somewhere, do something, speak with someone, attend an event, etc. Note the use of the adverb дуже in the sentences below.
- Іване, я дуже хочу йти на концерт сьогодні!
- Мирося дуже хоче писати листи з Павлом, а Павло не хоче це робити.
- Наталія відпочиває сьогодні, але вона дуже хоче грати в теніс завтра.
Now that you have a good understanding of verb combinations using хотіти, you can see that the adverb дуже plays a great role in emphasizing the actions expressed by these combinations. The new adverb used in the Unit dialogue is надвір (outside). It is a combination of two words:
на (on) + двір (yard, backyard, courtyard)
The combined word надвір has taken on the general meaning outside (it is not limited to one’s own yard or personal outdoor space).
This course has familiarized you with three types of adverbs:
- Adverbs of Place: тут, там, ось, куди, де, додому, удома, надвір.
These adverbs tell where something happens in general terms. (Nouns give more specific information)
- Adverbs of Time: коли, тепер, сьогодні, вчора, завтра, щотижня, щодня, часто.
These adverbs tell how often or when an action happens.
- Adverbs of Manner: так, справді, ні, звичайно, шкода, добре, дуже.
These adverbs tell how something is done.
X. Exercise 4.ii
Identify the adverbs in the sentences below by underlining them. Then form new sentences by inserting different adverbs.
1. Звичайно ми йдемо грати у волейбол у понеділок, а в теніс у четвер.

Cultural Enrichment Segments A & B
The Cultural Enrichment Segments “Ukrainian Dance and Regions of Ukraine” and “Ukrainians in the World” introduced you to many geographical terms. The Ukrainian names of countries and continents are quite easy to learn in as they are very similar to their English counterparts. You will recall that such terms are called cognates. Geographical terms which were presented include:
