A. Information for Online Credit Students

At this time the online course is available through the Cyber School.

  • The duration of the online credit course e-mova: Core Ukrainian 10 is 150 days.
  • Students may begin the course at any time during the regular school year.
  • Weekends, weekdays and holidays are included in the 150 day total. The months of July and August are excluded from the schedule.
  • A mark will be assigned to each student by the course instructor upon completion of the course. This mark will be registered with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education and will appear on the student's provincial transcript.

This time frame allows students to have the equivalent of 100 hours of classroom instruction, in accordance with provincial guidelines for all high school credit courses. It is strongly recommended that the course be completed either during the first or the second semester of a regular school year.

Contact with the online Ukrainian instructor will be pre-arranged at certain intervals and the instructor will have flexible office hours for questions, oral assignments and general assistance. Fax, phone and video conferencing may be utilized for segments of the course. The course instructor will contact students regarding these arrangements.

If a student is experiencing difficulty completing the course material in a given session, there will be a 75-day window of opportunity in which the student may request to be reassigned to the next consecutive online session. The student would begin working on the course at the point where he/she discontinued in the previous session and the original registration fee would be honoured. The registration fee with the Cyber School is non-refundable if the student chooses to discontinue with the second session.

Course Material

Course material is available at all times on the Ministry of Education Ukrainian Education Portal at www.spiritsd.ca/ukrainian. It is located in the High School pull-down menu under the title 'Curriculum Documents' . Click into Ukrainian as a Subject (Core).

Students registered through the Cyber School will have access to the same course material, and will work under the supervision of a course instructor. Students can only obtain provincial credit for the course if they are taught by a certified Saskatchewan teacher of Ukrainian.

A course package and CD-ROM may be obtained from Curriculum Distribution Services for a nominal fee. Course materials may be duplicated for individual or classroom use only.

Course Description

The online course e-mova: Core Ukrainian 10 introduces the Ukrainian language to English-speaking students. The course begins with the Cyrillic alphabet and writing skills, then proceeds to basic elements of conversation, Ukrainian grammatical structures and cultural content.

The course is divided into 12 segments, or Units, which span 12 days each.

Introductory Unit: This segment provides information about the Ukrainian language and introduces the sounds and corresponding written forms of the Cyrillic alphabet.

Units I – X: Each of these segments introduces a new unit of language study. Each unit contains a "PowerPoint" (Ppt) dialogue presentation, oral and written practise exercises, and an assignment worth 5% of the total mark. The practise exercises will be reviewed periodically by the instructor, while the assignment will be marked at the end of each Unit.

Summary Unit: The last segment provides time for review and study. A practise exam is included in the summary unit. The Final Exam completes the online course.

The course is further enhanced by Reference Sections and Cultural Enrichment segments which provide information on selected Ukrainian topics.

B. Information for Teachers

The course content found in e-mova: Core Ukrainian 10 provides certified teachers of Ukrainian with the necessary resource material to teach this course for credit. Course content reflects provincial curriculum guidelines. Materials from the course may be duplicated for classroom instruction only.

The use of e-mova: Core Ukrainian 10 as a classroom teaching resource has a three-fold purpose.

(1) It gives students and teachers access to Ukrainian language course materials at any time.

(2) It ensures that the same level of quality programming is available whether instruction takes place in-school, out-of-school, or by distance learning.

(3) It allows for flexibility to make seamless transitions between in-school, out-of-school and distance learning courses for continued language study at the 20 and 30 levels.

Classroom teachers of Ukrainian are in a unique position to use a hybrid approach to language teaching (meaning classroom instruction which utilizes online course material). Internet access to the online course material allows parents, grandparents and other speakers of Ukrainian to assist students with language learning outside the classroom. This is an excellent way to create bridges for language learning between home, school and community.

C. Information for Adult Learners

Many individuals become interested in learning the Ukrainian language at various phases and stages of life. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education supports lifelong learning, a term which means that learning does not stop after attaining a secondary or post-secondary education. For this reason, adult learners who wish to pursue language learning at their own pace (without the assistance of a teacher) are encouraged to use the materials contained in this online course for independent study.

Course packages (handbook and CD-ROM) are available from Curriculum Distribution Services at a nominal fee. If assistance is required, it is recommended that a tutor or speaker of the language in the local community be approached to assist with Ukrainian language learning for adult learners.
